Today I’m linking up with Leslie for her 10 on the 10th link up and answering her 10 questions about school days. I have written a bit about our back to school plans already, but with all the kids having started school now, as well as some of these questions being about my own school days, I hope this post will still be interesting for all!
1. What does back to school look like in your home or community this year?
The governor delayed the start of school till after Labor Day, when we normally start mid August. The county decided the numbers are too high now for in person school. Our small private school did open in person on Tuesday – we are doing every other week in person / virtual.
Here are our schedules. Simon has two – one for at home and one for in school. Gabbie helped me make this!
2. Does your state or city offer a back to school tax free weekend? If so, do you plan your back to school shopping around it? What kinds of things do you buy?
Our neighboring state, Missouri, usually has a tax free weekend. I don’t know if it happened this year. Last year we bought Zachary’s graphic calculator during that weekend.
3. Do your children wear school uniforms? If so, what do they look like? If not, is there a strict dress code in place? What are your thoughts on school uniforms? Did you wear a uniform?
My boys’ school does have a uniform – blue, pink, or maroon shirts with collars and blue, black, or khaki bottoms. Once they reach high school, they no longer have to wear the uniform, but they still have a dress code. No jeans, etc. I like our uniform because it makes shopping for clothes easier. I did not have a uniform in school.

4. What did you want to be when you were growing up? Did you plan to go to college?
The only thing I remember wanting to be was a writer. I always knew I’d go to college but didn’t know what I’d major in.
5. What sports did you play, what clubs were you in? Were you a cheerleader?
In high school, I played tennis for a little while. I wasn’t good. As a younger kid, I did town sports including gymnastics, ball hockey, softball, and yes, cheerleading. I wasn’t good at any of them! I was more of a club person. Some of the clubs I did in high school were French club, literary magazine, and my synagogue youth group.
6. Did you buy lunch or take lunch? If you took lunch from home, who made your lunch? What was your favorite school lunch?
I think I mostly brought. My mom made my lunch. I would have a sandwich of either cheese with lettuce, tuna with cheese, or egg salad. I also remember bringing chips, cookies, and / or candy, and probably a fruit. I pulled out my boys’ lunch boxes this week for the first time in forever!
7. To what group or clique did you belong? At my school we had the jocks, the parking lot gang, popular kids. Where did you fit in? Were you in a sorority? If so, which one?
The loser group? I didn’t fit in with any group really. In high school I sat with a group of diverse kids – like none of us celebrated Christmas kind of diverse. My main group of friends were in my youth group, but they didn’t go to my school. Although I did go to sorority rush, I did not get into one that I wanted to join.
8. Did you spend much time in the library? What was your favorite class?
I don’t really remember spending much time in the library in high school, but I did use the library in college. My favorite classes were English and electives.
9. What are some of your favorite high school memories? Homecoming? Prom? Have you returned for any class reunions?
I don’t have a lot of good high school memories. I did go to prom with my then boyfriend, who didn’t go to my high school (and was not a very nice person). I haven’t gone to any reunions.
10. How old were you when you started school? Did you have a favorite teacher?
I missed the school cut off date by I think 10 days, or maybe it was a month, I’m not sure. In any case, I was tested and allowed to start kindergarten at 4. I was always the youngest in my class. I really liked my teachers in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades. Some of my other favorite teachers were my band teacher in junior high and my French teacher in high school.
