Of the most important components of your home is your roof. Without it, you’d get very wet very quickly, and it protects you from the elements and it protects your belongings from being stolen. A home without a roof is not complete, and yet, like any part of your house, regular maintenance is a must.
If you are not checking and regularly maintaining your roof, you’re going to struggle with keeping your home protected. Ignoring signs of damage can do more harm than good and cause a small bill to become a very expensive job in the end. Here are the signs that you need that indicate that your roof is in need of repair.
1. Your gutters are broken. Is there a cracked downpipe or are you dealing with gutters that have split in the cold? No matter what, you need to make sure that your gutters are intact, because otherwise you’re going to struggle with potential mold in your home. Your gutters protect your home from water pooling in the walls and in the ceilings because it helps the water to transfer down to the drains on the floor. If your gutters are broken, you’re going to find it very difficult to keep your home protected from any mildew building up and that can be a very expensive job.
2. You have missing or damaged shingles. It’s a very obvious sign: you’re walking down the street and you happen to glance at your home and you notice a few holes in your roof because there are shingles missing. This can happen because of strong wind, heavy rain, or wear and tear over time. When you inspect your roof regularly, you’ll be able to see any shingle damage such as curling or cracking in advance. The last thing you want to have to deal with is any granular loss or shingle damage, and addressing it promptly can prevent any water from coming into your home.
3. You have water stains on your ceilings or walls. This is actually a very clear indication that your roof is leaking and there are some problems going on upstairs. Some leaks can go unnoticed for a while, but you need to address them as soon as you see them because you need to prevent water damage and mold growth. Inspecting your attic and the ceilings of your upper rooms of the signs of water intrusion is important, and water intrusion can look like damp insulation or rotting wood. Minor leaks are never minor because they will worsen overtime.
4. Your roof is sagging. A sagging or dropped roof is a big issue that could create a huge emergency if not dealt with quickly. It can show that there is rotting wood underneath the roof surface or structural damage to the home. You don’t want to compromise the integrity of the entire roof or pose a safety hazard to those sleeping below, so if you see any sagging or dropping, you need to make sure you speak to a professional as soon as you can. They can assess the damage correctly and help you to get your roof back to its shape.
