In second grade in our school, the kids study poetry. Right now, they need to find an animal themed poem and bring it in to share with their class. It was very convenient that we received the book Hey, Baby!: A Collection of Pictures, Poems, and Stories from Nature’s Nursery because on top of its cute animal baby pictures, it also contains animal poems!
Hey, Baby features photographs, stories, and poems, plus facts about animals and nature. Simon enjoyed looking through the book and reading the poems that introduce each section. He eventually chose to use the poem “The Giraffe.” Each section is about a different habitat, begins with a poem, and ends with a photo gallery of “more itty bitty babies” called a Tot Lot.
Inside each section are the profiles of many animals, along with stories about animal friendships, animal rescue, and folktales. We have been reading a bit of the book each night and we love learning what each animal baby is called (did you know a baby rabbit is a kitten and not a bunny?) and what they like to eat. When Simon heard that baby beavers (kits) like apples, he said “me too!”
Hey, Baby is a National Geographic book. We have been fans of their books for awhile now and we love that purchases of National Geographic Kids books supports the National Geographic Society in their exploration, research, and conservation efforts!
