When we travel to NJ, we tend to spend a good amount of time in NYC, and this trip was no exception. We decided to visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park. I had been there twice before and my first visit there always stuck with me. I think it is arranged slightly different now, but it is no less meaningful.
While the day we went to the museum was foggy and drizzly, the boys actually were in the same area a few days earlier, biking with their older cousin. Simon wanted me to share pictures from that as well:
This is apparently the headquarters of Men in Black – I don’t know but that’s what Simon told me!
They actually ended up at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in the cafe there eating babka:
And now for the actual museum visit. Their current special exhibit is about the rescue of the Jews in Denmark during the Holocaust. This story is familiar to us from the book Number The Stars. I didn’t take pictures of the exhibit, although it was interesting.
What I did take pictures of was information that reminds me of the current situation in Israel. The museum shows the state of the world prior to the Holocaust and a lot of the things that happened seem to have an echo in today’s world as well.
This was in the Denmark exhibit actually, but shows how the Red Cross was mislead.
Explaining how the Jewish people lived in the Disapora.
I also took pictures of these Jewish cultural items on display.
Gabbie and Zachary checking out the exhibits:
Antisemitism over time:
You probably can’t see the text here, but it suggests having the Jewish people move to Jersalem (or the Fiji Islands…)
More Jewish items:
And some info from the early days of the Holocaust:
Nowy Sacz is where Dave’s mother’s family is from:
A plea to remember:
After the museum, it was raining and I was a party pooper who did not want to take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. We did go to dinner (back in NJ) with Dave’s sister and her son – the same cousin featured above!
