After we spent time with our parents in south Florida, we planned a small getaway trip to the Florida Keys. This was meant to be at the end of the trip before we left for home, but it turned out to be the middle part of the trip instead. Sadly, we ended up in the Keys for the coldest days of the trip and it felt a bit wasted, but we did have a good time.
We left from Dave’s parents’ place on Sunday morning, which was also Christmas Day. You may have heard of the stereotype that insists Jewish people must have Chinese food on Christmas. This is because while many restaurants are closed on Christmas, Chinese restaurants are open. However, if you are in an area with kosher restaurants, there are many options available! So we had lunch in Miami at a fish and chips restaurant. And…then we picked up a Chinese food order to take along to Key Largo that night.
Because it was freezing outside, we decided not to go to Key Largo early, because we wouldn’t be able to swim there or hang out on the beach. So instead we made a stop at the science museum in Miami. Unfortunately, a lot of it was also outside, and it was so windy that it was hard to enjoy it!
There is an aquarium section:

Outside of the museum there was an art display of painted dogs and cats. I would have liked to see more of them, but again, it was too cold!
We continued on the way to Key Largo! We spent one night at the Baker’s Cay Resort in Key Largo. There was plenty to do there, but again – too cold. Okay, yes, it was much colder at home, but this was Florida! Dave and the kids went biking around the resort, but I stayed in the room and read. They came to the window and I took photos of them though!
While they were biking, I had an awkward moment with the lights in the room. Just turning the knob didn’t turn on the lamps – you had to turn more until they clicked. But I told Dave that I didn’t know how to turn them on and Simon told the front desk, who sent a maintenance guy to help me. How embarrassing.
Anyway, that evening we lit our menorah and ate our Chinese food in our room!
And then it seems we all got into the bed for a picture. (LOL – I don’t know what we were actually doing!)
The kids managed to get me out of the room to walk around the resort a bit and we ended up taking photos by the pretty lights!
Some of us (not me, not Zachary!) decided it would be fun to go to the hot tub in the cold weather. They said it wasn’t so bad, but I can’t do that! That night, we watched Home Alone until it was time to sleep.
Next time I’ll share our time spent in Key West, so stay tuned!
