The kids have finished their first quarter of the school year and since I haven’t written much about them lately, I thought I would post a school update today.
[Simon]
Simon tries hard, but struggles in both math and English classes. He is getting math tutoring and that helped on the test he took after his first tutoring session. He didn’t fare as well on his next quiz. He blamed that on being distracted by another student and his teacher claims the other student did not distract him at all and Simon was just nervous that he would be distracted. Anxiety is an issue too, I believe! As for English, he got extra help from his teacher and she said he understood and adjusted his assignment well when they were working together, but didn’t apply what he learned to the rest of the assignment. He currently has an essay due that he has barely worked on, so looks like I will be trying to help him out with that!
[Zachary]
Zachary, on the other hand, just doesn’t care. If he’s interested, he does well. If he isn’t, he does the minimal and puts forth no effort. If it was at all possible I would just let it go, but I am finding that difficult! As a 10th grader with college aspirations, he should be trying harder.
This week Zachary went to homecoming with his class. He wore a suit and everything. He denied our request for photos, sadly!
[Gabbie]
Although she has already missed too many days of school to count, Gabbie is able to keep her grades up. She is quite a procrastinator, but she gets things done. I am currently not forcing her to write the essays she needs to complete for her next due college application. She can do it or not, it’s up to her. She has submitted four applications and she has been admitted to 2 of those schools already – KU and Temple. She has three more applications to complete.
Last week we attended Gabbie’s Advanced Placement award ceremony. She got a 4 or a 5 on the AP tests she took last spring. So her name is on the banners and we got a yard sign!
She also got her October ACT results and she raised her score by 2 points!
So…any advice on my not worrying about my kids’ school situations?
