With the current situation, you might not want to travel somewhere far away. However, it doesn’t hurt to daydream about a sunny island, where it’s warm year-round, ocean waves crashing rhythmically into the shore. If you have already planned a trip to a tropical island like Koh Samui in the future, these 8 tips will be useful for you.
Beware of the sun
Regardless of the time of the year, the sun on a tropical island can be quite brutal, especially for the kids. Hence, bring along lots of sunblocks, aloe vera gel, lip balm, sun hat and shades. Remember to schedule some rest away from the sun and reapply sunscreen frequently. Sometimes the kids can have so much fun playing with the waves that they don’t notice how hot it can be. Furthermore, you should avoid going to the beach at noon. If possible, schedule your beach time in the morning or a bit later in the afternoon.
Always bring a reusable water bottle
It’s very easy to get dehydrated when it’s too hot outside. Hence, bring along a reusable water bottle with you. Do note that tap water is not drinkable, so when you can, fill up that bottle. Alternatively, if you are on a Thai island, try coconut water. It’s an excellent way to stay hydrated, and Thai coconuts are known to be sweet, fresh and tasty!
Use baby powder to remove sand
If you plan to have plenty of beach time, getting rid of the sand can be quite a challenge. This is when baby powder comes to the rescue. Simply sprinkle the powder on when the sand is stuck, it will absorb moisture from your skin, and the sand comes off more easily.
Bring 2 pair of swimsuits
If you want to pack light, this is optional. Your swimwear may not dry overnight, so if you are not comfortable wearing that, bring a spare. However, if you are going straight to the pool or the sea, this might not matter much.
Flip flops & sandals
Wearing sneakers all day is not exactly comfortable, especially when you are going to the beach, and the sand may get into your shoes. Hence pack some flipflops or sandals, so you can easily slip in and out.
Bring lots of wet wipes
When you are traveling with kids, you can never pack enough wet wipes. Hand sanitizer is helpful as well, since you may not have access to clean water at all times.
Don’t forget mosquito/bug repellent
Due to hot, humid weather and abundant greenery, tropical islands are home to lots of insects, so remember to pack some bug repellent.
If the swimming pool water makes your hair green, use ketchup.
Have you ever encountered a situation when your hair turns green after staying in the pool for too long? You can use ketchup, and the color will be back again. It sounds gross, but it works. Simply get the cheapest ketchup you can find, apply it on your hair for about 20 minutes, then rinse off as usual.
I hope these tips are helpful to you. Have fun and make lots of wonderful memories with the kids!
