With the earliest college application deadline approaching, Gabbie is getting into the most important part of the process of applying to colleges – the actual college application. She is working on her common app, including her essay, with Lindsay from Simply Admissions. Gabbie narrowed down the list of colleges that she wants to apply to, visited some of them, and now she needs to work on and fine tune her application and essay.
What Should You Write Your Common App Essay About?
If you are wondering what you should write your college essay about, you are not alone. Many people choose to write about something challenging in their life that they went through, something important to them, or an event or issue in their life. Gabbie considered writing about changing schools her sophomore year of high school, but is now writing about being at the Jewish Community Center on the day in which a shooting took place. The common app has prompts for essays and it is likely that you can fit a topic that is important to you into one of the prompts.
How To Get Started Writing Your Essay
On Lindsay’s blog, she shares three great ways to start your essay in order to hook your reader. She suggests starting with visual imagery including descriptive words, a random fact or question, or dialogue. If you choose to work with Lindsay, she will help you get started and give you suggestions to improve your essay.
Fine Tuning Your Essay
One of the things that Lindsay wants Gabbie to add and adjust in her essay is descriptions of how she felt. It is important to use descriptive language that helps the reader feel that they are with you in the moment you are writing about. I think that Gabbie is struggling to put herself back in the scary event she experienced when she was much younger, but if she is able to access those feelings, she will be better able to share this story about herself and make her essay stand out.
I am happy that we have Lindsay to help us through this process. As it is, I have to remind Gabbie to work on her application, but with Lindsay’s deadlines, Gabbie knows what she needs to complete and by when!
